Hello i bought a 12 foot Iwana near the end of last season & never got a chance to try it out. There is only a few places i fish that isn't full of overhanging trees so it's use is limited but will use when i can.I will use it for Dry Fly & Duo mostly at fairly short distance trying to keep most of the line off the water. With this type of fishing i think level lines would work best.I will be wanting to make a few leaders in different sizes & some fairly short possibly.Would Berkly Vanish work OK & what diameters would i buy. Cheers

I'm only new to Tenkara but read somewhere between 15-20 lb line in hi viz is a good start, depending on what action of rod you own. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in

For leaders, you will find it is best that you can see them. Chris Stuart at www.tenkarabum.com has some quite comprehensive information on leaders and colours. Suggest you check that out. Alternatively, I use Simon's 12' Tenkara and 7' indicator furled leaders for my Tenkara fishing. www.custom-furles.com

The reason i asked about Berkly Vanish is i can get it cheap.I also think i might need to experiment a lot with different size leaders .Tenkara Bum leaders are fairly expensive for experimenting with.If using Berkly Vanish for experimenting with would 14lb (0.013) for calm & 17lb (0.015) for windy conditions be about right.I have a pack of line marked as 4.5 level line i bought with the rod.Pedros how well do your furled leaders work fishing pocket water & in windy conditions. When i have used furled leaders in the past i found them poor in the wind & okward when you need to lift most of your line off for a drag free drift.Cheers

The Berkly diameters sound fine. As for furled leaders, yes they are awkward in the wind, especially the longer ones. For pocket water I would use a shorter furled leader (7') with 5-6 foot of tippet. These shorter furles are very easy to keep off the water with the T. I have also found that with the long leaders, anchoring the last couple of inches on the water helps. Not in wind though.

I would stick with 4.5 stuff you got from Tenkara USA for the time being. The memory coils pull out of it very easily, the chalky green colour is usually quite visible and can be tarted up with a bit of paint if necessary. 4.5 [.37mm I think] is a good general size and if you require something a bit more delicate or want the end to to float, you can tie a on a length of 12lb nylon.
You should get 3 lines out of the 35ft length and they last for ever.
Chris.

Berkley Vanish will work fine for experimenting with different lengths and weights, although I don't think it's quite as stiff as either the Tenkara USA line or my Hi-Vis line. For level lines, like for the butt sections of hand tied leaders, stiffer is a little better. As Pedros indicated, the weights you mentioned are fine. The .013" is the same diameter as my size 4 line and the .015" is very close to the size 5. For more delicate casts on windless days, you could also try a .011" line, which is the diameter of the size 3. I think eventually you will want the high vis, but it is good to experiment.
