Thanks Phil, a simple pattern but these are often the best. Just off to the Dee so will tie one now. Another excellent version that Dyfan showed me has a pheasant tail herl body. Again we see his method of winding through the hackle, keeps everything secure.

Thanks Louis. Good luck on the Dee.
I think simple herl bodied flies have become an abiding feature of my tying be it kebari or western emerger patterns. So simple yet the fish seem to like them. As well as adding security and robustness to the hackle Masami also says he winds the thread through the hackle to purposefully dishevel it so as to look more natural. It's that messy fly catch fish idea again.
Cheers

Great video Phil. I like that fly. Very similar to another well known SK, the GRHE. One recommended by Louis. Thank you.

Fair point Richard and it does look to be large. Perhaps a big hook chosen for the purposes of filming? Having said that I know that Japanese exponents do use really quite large flies if the occasion demands it. Glyn

Interesting fly but a bit large for my tasts Richard Masami and other tenkara anglers will tie a pattern in a number of sizes for the given stream conditions. As Glyn suggests a large fly also makes for easier video.
