OK - dead basic .... lines !
I've not even got the rod yet, but it's likely to be an 8' Issui and be put to use mostly on a fairly narrow small river/large stream with the inevitable overhanging vegetation.
So, mightily confused - there's furled leaders, there's specialised tenkara level lines and there's DIY hi vis approx' 15lb Ultima - am I starting to get the hang of it ?

In the tightest spots on my local small streams I use an 8' Issui. If there is no room to actually cast other than a tiny flick of the wrist I sometimes use a 7' furled leader (made by Rod Dibble, but now by Jim Williams), otherwise a 7' level number 3 fluorocarbon line, plus 3' of tippet should be ideal. You'll find the fluorocarbon easier to cast than the Ultima copolymer. For over 3 years I've tended to use copolymer level lines but am moving towards fluorocarbon as I can cast as well with a number 1.5 or 2 level fluoro line as I can with a 3 copolymer line. I like the lightest line I can get away with so I can hold line off the water better.

Hi Chris
You're getting the hang of it. I am a level line man. Has to be fluorocarbon because co-polymer doesn't have the weight for the diameter. I've tried furled leaders and yes they work but I can't hold them off the water as well as my level lines. I would suggest a 3.5# level line to begin with and then work down to lighter lines as you get the hang of it.
Cheers
Cust.
