Anyone tried one of these? Hemingway's seems to be an Eastern European manufacturer which also sells direct via Flyfisher's Friend. I've been fly fishing for a few years and fancy trying Tenkara without spending a lot of cash. Hemingway's do a Tenkara outfit for a reasonable price but there are no proper reviews of it. The rod is the key bit of kit so has anyone on here tried one? linky

I don't know anything about the rods or the company. The rods look nice on the web site. With Tenkara rods customer support it important, If you break a tip you want to be be able to get back on the water quickly. Tenkara times, esoteric tackle and tenkara UK all provide good customer service. I'd make sure you can get this service with a Hemingway rod before you buy one.

The only Hemingway Tenkara rod I've seen was one that was on show at the 2012 BFFI & it was awful; like a quiver tip rod. I don't know what there more recent rod(s) are like.
As Paul says personally I'd go for a rod with known pedigree & backup. The Some Great Rods thread that I started has my opinions of what rods I'd recommend. If you're just starting I'd go for a 12' (360cm) 6:4 rod coupled with two 3.5 weight level fluorocarbon lines, one 2' shorter than the rod plus 3' of tippet to fish small nymphs, Kebari flies & dry fl;its & one 5' shorter than the rod with 6" of bright braid as an indicator & 5' of tippet to use for Czech nymphing. Cheep rods are just that! There are some great Tenkara rods for £80 to £100. A couple of fluorocarbon lines & 2 EZ keepers will add another £!0 or so which is cheep when you consider that I'm nearly 100% sure that you'll get hooked on Tenkara.

Many thanks for the replies, chaps. I think I'll steer clear and have a look at the rod thread.

Don't forget that UK manufacturers generally have all the spare parts if you break a tip or lose a plug and can get them to you quickly so you don't lose valuable fishing time!
There are a number of people round the UK that have many rods that I am sure they would let you try. Why not book some time with the Discover Tenkara chaps, Louis Noble, Dave Southall or Stuart Wardle? I am sure there are others that would be only too pleased to help you find the best rod for you. Not all rods are created equal!
Daniel.

grhe, I only started Tenkara in June. I also got good advice from Dave. The best thing I did, however, was have a day with the lads from Discover Tenkara. Can not recommend them highly enough. Sound advice from the members of this forum. Good luck, I am sure you will get "hooked".
