I took delivery of Daniel's new rod last Tuesday. A 13' 6" rod with a 7:3 action. I had already arranged to go to the river and used it that very afternoon. The Ribble had extra water in from the previous days rain and it was coloured. The rod just felt right from the start and I had no difficulty in casting a longish line. It performed well. I can appreciate the power and strength in the rod but it is still light. (96 Grams). Good finish and a solid case. I showed it to a few people yesterday at the Nidd Tenkara Day. All who handled it thought it was a good rod that cast well. I have not got the knowledge/qualifications to tell you how crisp it is and all the technical jargon. I just know it will do the job well and I like it. I can recommend the rod. You would not be disappointed in it. As the river was up a bit from the rain the water was cold and murky. I only got two Parr.

One thing I have done with my Tenkara rods, is varnish the handles. Speaking with Mike yesterday and showing him a varnished handle he said he was dead against it. He said the cork would out live the rod. I do like the varnished finish. Any one else any views or experiences?

I have for many years now used wax furniture polish in solid form for treating cork on all new rod handles and found it not only helps to waterproof them but makes them easier to wipe down when required. As long as you wipe off the excess there ae no issues and the cork takes on a slighlty golden colouring.Check out my Tenkara rod handles! I have found this a really useful tip and feel certain it enhances the cork and prevents any drying out.In no circumstances would I varnish cork as Mike has pointed out - it looks and feels awful. Cheers Glyn

Glyn, I will take your advice. I will leave the Masu as it is. I always thought they looked good varnished. Thank you.
