I had a few hours on the 'Crown Inn' stretch of the Alwen in Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyer on Wednesday. It's only 1/2 a mile long, but produced 14 beautiful, copper coloured trout with white edged anal fins. The water above is £20 for a day ticket. It looks like amazing T. water, but it's a bit overgrown in parts. There's also the Ceirw near by.
I didn't get to look around as much as I would like. I'll try and go before the end of the season, if I can find the time. No grayling seen, any advice regarding where to look would be appreciated. The Grayling Society's guide mentions the river.
The pub itself is an old drovers inn and retains a lot of its character. It was a joy to experience a traditional old fashioned pub with excellent beer! They seem to be becoming harder to find these days. The Crown charges £8 a night per tent and £5 for half a days fishing. Handy if you arrive in the afternoon and want to go further afield the next day.
It would be great to hear about other people's experiences and observations about the Alwen, as I hope to explore a bit more of it soon!

That sounds fabulous Dyfan, you must take me there. I've only experience of the Alwen just above the hatchery at Maerdy and it's always been difficult to catch more than one or two. Trout only. A shame because the nature of the water is perfect for Tenkara.
Cheers,

Let me know when you're free and we'll go. Won't take long to fish and if you've got time it might be worth having a look further up stream for future reference. With the pub there, it could be an ideal location for a social next year perhaps?
My visit came about after we bumped into Bob Glynn the other day. I was telling my Dad about it and we started reminiscing about The Crown, so we headed up. I owe Caroline a night off now though!

As far as I'm aware there are no Grayling in either the Alwen or the Ceirw although I would love someone to prove me wrong.

You're right about the Ceirw Frank but there are plenty of Ladies in the lower Alwen - the problem is getting permission to fish !
