Monnow Lower Longtown beat Frist time out with a T rod was yesterday. I tried something a bit different and fished with 2 or three spider patterns tied with revers hackles in the Valsesiana style. It was successful and I took four decent trout.

defiantly up stream with very short drifts. Just casting and then quickly retrieving and recasting. 3 to 4 second drifts.

I was lucky enough to be able to join a Grayling Society day organised on the Wye and Usk passport beats by the indefatigable Roger Smith. Flatsghost also joined the party! The rivers had been dropping nicely but a short period of localised heavy rain, just after the go-ahead was confirmed, spiked them overnight. Luckily the dryer weather on the morning undid some of the damage, but the Wye was ruled out. This left the Irfon and the Ithon to choose from. At least half went to explore the recently opened Ithon beat, but Steve from Hereford, fishing a duo conventionally, and I, fishing a weighted nymph with a tenkara rod, went off to the Cammarch Hotel Middle beat. The river, which is about 50 foot wide at this point, was a bit high but looked fishable so we walked down the beat about a mile and then worked back up. The banks are quite heavily wooded and steep so you have to wade to fish. With the river up this meant getting in and out quite a lot as we worked up. We both happened to be inexperienced grayling anglers and new to the beat, so whether our lack of initial success at finding anything was due to the absence of fish or skill I cannot judge! However, as we got toward the top of the beat, we came to a spot where a riffle was followed by a narrowing of the main current into a deep fast glide in the centre of the stream. The slacker water to either side of this glide seemed a good place to try. I had just changed to a small black-beaded flashback nymph from an ineffective killer bug (after Daves orange variant). It stopped in the nearside of the stream as it trundled down. It seemed stuck on the bottom, but then the bottom moved jerkily upstream and I realised it was probably a hidden grayling of reasonable size. Sadly I raised my rod too high and the line stuck in an overhanging branch. Exit grayling or gremlin. However, where there is one there should be more. In the end two small but lively grayling came to my hand from the nearside water where it shallowed, one was lost after a few seconds and a further good fish that took the nymph in the deeper farside water, also shed the hook but in a less embarrassing manner. Joining me in this pool, Steve also contacted two fish in the deeper water, but, sadly, both shed the hook. It is the first time I have dressed or fished one of these understated flashback nymphs. I will definitely tie more. Access along the bank is easy and parking at the nearby hotel, or the adjacent road, is very convenient. The WUF passport scheme is admirable and this beat is well worth a visit! I am told the Ithon was also productive and has the advantage of being less wooded. Further events are planned this year: mailer.wyeuskfoundation.org/display?e=8d8dc90543986d86469b2a009aaded15BTW, the rod was an Amago (13' 6"), perhaps a little long for comfort.

A very comprehensive report Dave and yes it was a good day spoiled by the overnight dump of rain. Lovely to meet up with like minded fishermen and women and the cakes at the end were very acceptable! I would say to all that the two beats on the Ithon are well worth a visit and Tenkara is a suitable method with plenty of open access. Builth is a good centre from which a number of venues can be easily accessed for those of you who might be considering a trip. I suspect dbl will be making the journey south again for another trip when the conditions are better! I also found Tenkara gave me better presentation as one might expect and which produced fish. Thanks for this Dave and look forward to seeing you again on stream. Glyn

New season first time our today and fished the Dore at Chanston Court. Managed my first WBT of the season. It popped its head up and then found my fly! Good to be on the river with kingfishers and also a sparrow hawk.
