Hello all been thinking about buying aTenkara Rod for a while but not sure what to buy. They looks a bit unsuitable for some of the small overgrown streams i fish. But on more open streams it looks like it could be good fun.I would mostly be using it for dry fly & upstream spider also duo dry fly and weighted nymph on the point.I am leaning towards a 12 ft Iwana.A lot of the rods are softish action do you have problems setting the hook.Any recommendations welcome. Cheers

I'd suggest the 12' Iwana is adequate for most UK river situations. Even on overgrown streams 12' is not too much. The key in the overgrown areas is in the leader length. If you purchase some level leaders then you can cut several at different lengths. For my outing yesterday, I used 12 ' of Iwana and a 7' furled leader, just varying the length of tippet relative to the pool that was being fished. At one point I used about 7' of tippet (5lb to 3lb to 2lb), added to the 7' furled leader, to flick a small midge imitation across. Still turned over beautifully. At the next pool, total tippet reduced to about 5' with a nymph attached. As for setting the hook, no problem on dry fly, but I am bumping a fair few with heavier nymphs. However this is often due to small strikes to prevent the cast flying up into the overhead canopy.

Pedros i have ordered a Iwana 12 ft some level line & a couple of line spools.I will probably pick up a couple of furled leaders as i only have 5 ft ones.Do you always use a 7 ft furled leader or do you use a 10.5 one when fishing larger rivers. Also how heavy do you find you can go with nymphs with your Iwana. Cheers

RabMax, I mainly use a 10.5 ft level leader. These are the most versatile for dry fly and nymph/wet. The furled leaders (custom made www.custom-furles.com) I mainly use for heavier nymphs as the leaders are floro green to help bite indication. I have used nymphs upto 3mm Tungsten. Often a two nymph set up with say a 3mm Tungsten on the point and a 2.5mm Tugsten on the point. What often helps with this weight nymph is the fact you can feel them bouncing along the river bed via the fine tip of the Iwana. I wouldn't really go any larger than that. BTW the short 7' leader was used so I didn't have to lift the rod too high when tracking.
