Hi A bit of advice would be great. I plan to have a go at Tenkara but at present the only thing I have available is a 3m French fishing pole. It only bends in the tip section. What I plan to do is to make a furled leader. What length should this be and how long does the tippet need to be? I will be able to experiment a bit in the garden to see if I can get the system right before I try it on the water. This setup will have to do as my fishing budget is taken up with other projects but if all goes well I hope to be able to invest in a Tenkara rod later this year. Richard

I'll bow to superior knowledge but on a 12ft rod, a leader of 10.5 ft and tippet of say, 4ft works well, ie, 14.5 ft total.
I think this would be too much on your 3 mtr pole, pro-rata reduction brings it down to say, a 9ft leader & 4ft tippet.
If you're fishing the smaller WUF streams this would be fine.
You'll get a lot of very helpful tips shortly I'm sure.
Good luck. Louis

If you are on a budget instead of faffing about with making a furled leader go down to your home handymans store and check out their nylon cordage. I found that there was a 3mm braided cord, bought 6m and had a play. I found that it worked just fine on a 12 ft tenkara rod. Add a fluro tippet of 4/5 ft and you are in the money. Trouble was it only came in white so coloured it green with an orange tip using permenant markers. It really works well and is on a par with 20lb 0.44mm flurocarbon. Cord is OK with water with a little colour but fluro' is a must for gin clear. Hope this helps

Making furled leaders is no problem for me. I make them all the time as I sell short ones on ebay. I only need to make a bigger jig. I will make them out of Co-polymer as this is more cost effective than using flurocarbon. Richard

Hello Richard, I've tried various lines and my personal choice would be furled leader. If you have a lawn get some bamboo from a garden center cut it into short stakes tent peg size and you can knock them into the grass/lawn to make you're big jig. It saves storing a 12/13ft plank of wood.
Ps Make sure the grass is very short first as it can get caught up.

Thanks Paul. That sounds a good idea. Only problem is I am alergic to cutting the lawn. I better things to do. I have found a suitable piece of wood anmd will use that. Richard
