I received some packets of hooks from my man in Japan. They were old, but when I opened a packet they looked perfect. What I didn't realise was how old they actually were. After some discussion with a fly tying friend of mine I contacted Gamakatsu to see if they could identify the packet. Here is what they said: "We checked the hooks that you send picture. The product was sale 20 or 30 years ago and discontinude now." I guess that makes them a collectors item! What do you think? While I investigate further I've pulled them from the website. I've no idea what to charge for a piece of hook making history.

Cust, IMHO if they are only 20 - 30 years old years old you might struggle to find buyers who would consider them to be part of tenkara history...I think they would need to be a lot older than that. Perhaps you should try selling a packet internationally on ebay with no reserve then you'll get a feel for the demand and price....only a suggestion Good luck Alex

I wouldn't say they are part of Tenkara history, but in terms of hook making and Gamakatsu they are early.

Cus
I'd be tempted to keep them & make some sort of display from them. You dont often see such attractive packets with hooks these days.
Maybe put them in a picture frame with description of Tenkara to one side in some fancy writing?
Regards Stevie.

That's a good idea as well. They are very pretty packets. The plastic cover has folded paper inside and then folded tissue paper containing the hooks, which are pristine. It's not packaging we see on current hooks. Perhaps I'll unwrap one and take some pictures to show you.

Thanks Cus,
The packet is a little work of art.
I have a few boxes of early tiemco hooks that are a similar shape. It looks as though the points are slightly offset?
I'll have to try & get my tying "mojo" back & give these eyeless hooks a go.
Thanks again, Stevie.

The paper wasn't flat so I'm not sure they are slightly offset. I'll have to have a look later. It's a packet of these that is up for the photography competition, so get your entries ready to submit in May.
I need to get to my vice. I've got some seagull that is just desperate to get on a hook!
