I was having a nightmare french nymphing today with a western rod & mono french leader with strong winds.I wouldn't use my Tenkara rod on this river as it has mostly large trout.Anyway couldn't help making comparisons in my head between French nymphing with mono & Tenkara nymphing with flourocarbon level lines.French mono leaders are easier to hold off the water.Fluorocarbon leaders work much better against the wind.I am thinking about giving a fluorocarbon leader a try with french nymphing when windy instead of mono.I know it's not really about Tenkara but wondering if anyone here has tried a fluorocarbon leader for french nymphing with western rod.Cheers

The comparison has not been far from my thoughts and I'm investigating fluorocarbon leaders that would work well for both leader to hand and tenkara. The higher density and therefore narrower profile of fluorocarbon, combined with it's lack of memory make it an idea candidate. Unfortunately most fluorofarbon leaders are a bit short at a maximum of 3m or so. Great for tenkara, short for leader to hand.
Watch this space! ... That's all I'm saying.

rabmaxy, I've been suggesting fluorocarbon to French Nymphers for a couple years now and have gotten no interest. Same with Hi-Vis. To me the advantages are obvious, but perhaps there are aspects to French Nymphing that I am not aware of that make it undesireable. I cannot imagine why a long, hand tied, tapered leader made from Hi-Vis fluorocarbon would not be an improvement, especially when there is a bit of a breeze. One could be made at any length and with a range of different weights to suit the rod.
