Lets use this thread to try and help fly selection for a beginner at fly-fishing or even Tenkara. As I have been fly-fishing on small rivers here in Wales now for many years the first flies I would recommend would be a Gold Ribbed Hares Ear "GRHE" with a gold bead to give it some weight. Depending on the depth and speed of the river would depend on how heavy it would need to be? Size for me would be no bigger than a size 16 on a curved hook, 18 or 20 would be better. Small rivers equal small flies. Also I fish nymphs up stream as the nymphs tend to get down to where the fish are.

I voted "none of the above." On my home waters I'd choose a killer bug or CDC & Elk - either one, with a very slight preference for the killer bug. Of the flies listed, I'd choose the spider.

Pheasant Tailed Nymph in either olive or natural colour with bead or not depending on the situation have caught me many fish over the years. Dry fly, I use a Parachute Adams with a pink hi viz parachute. I tie all my own flies and it gives me great pleasure when i catch fish on these

Hi every body I think that the flies that you have always used can be used when fishing Tenkara, I have tied some Tenkara type flies which I use for downstream work sort of dribbling, but when I fish dry or nymph I will use my usual flies.
