Finally got to my tying bench to tie a few. Here's the pattern with my favorite snipe as the hackle: The hook is from Japan "Torrents-Ace GII" in what looks like size 7.5. It is a straight shank no eyed hook on very very fine wire but it does seem to be very strong for it's thickness. Here it is next to a size 12 Knapek dry fly hook. Cust.

VERY nice! What did you use for the eye loop?

I had some 30lb micro poly backing lurking about. I teased out the ends a little before tying it in. It spread evenly round the shank and bound in really tight. It also gave the fly a bit more thorax to work with rather than forever winding thread to build it up. I can get the 0.45mm silk, but silk will degrade over time. I have some other fine diameter braided line which is quite thin in green that I might have a go with.

custheyder, That's a really nice looking fly you've tied there.....very impressive..thanks for posting it. It's a pity no one in the UK stocks these straight shank no eyed hooks...I wouldn't mind giving them a go...but for the volume that I would tie...I don't think it would be economical to get them from Japan. Watch this space. I'm hoping to bring them in in various sizes if there is enough interest. They com e packaged in 36 pairs. Yup, pairs. Two hooks stuck together. They come apart easily but I'm not sure why they would do them that way, unless you are supposed to tie them as a double?
I'll be able to sell a box for about £7.50 just waiting for my man in Japan to get stocks of the smaller ones in as well.
