Do Tenkara tapers follow the 60:20:20 leader design rule? I'd like to tie up some of my own and reduce mistakes making them.

the beauty is that you can design your own leader to your liking. I started out with 1/3-1/3-1/3 and experimented from there. at the end of the day, it's all up to your personal preference.

So where did you end up? I guess I'm looking for the "holy grail" of tapers that will delicately present a dry flt and plop a weighted nymph....oh and factor in wind conditions, rod flex and casting stroke style. Asking the impossible perhaps.

the impossible indeed since there is no holy grail. I made a plethora of lines for different conditions and for different tenkara rods, using different materials (mono, fc, horse hair). one of my favorite self-made lines is actually a horse hair line, using the recipe that comes with the kit from Tenkarabum.com (he's on this forum, aka Chris Stewart). He also sells outstanding hand-tied hi-vis fc lines which are my favorite "bought" lines.

I am familiar with tenkarabum. Let the experiments begin!

Hi all, for Tenkara lines, it sounds like its horses for course and personal choice.
Have any of you tried the New Third Generation Line 10.5ft from Tenkara USA.
I used mine yesterday and it casts like a dream.. The presentation is fantastic and the turn over is spot on everytime...
Tight lines

buglife,
I was thinking of buying the 13' version length....do you think that would be too long for a 12' Iwana rod?

Hi Alex,
I think I would buy both lines 10.5ft and the 13ft, its good to have options. Dan of Tenkara USA is long lining so a 13ft should be fine..
Speak soon

I pretty much only use level lines. No need for a tapered line IMHO.

In my view a taper will always improve presentation. If there was a tapered knotless leader that could present the fly as delicately as a furled leader without the associated eccentricities of a furled leader whould that be of interest?
