Here's an SBS of a poly-ball Emerger first posted by me on CFF in the late 19th century. Various modifications have been made to protect the innocent.....
Hook: Kamasan B100 10
Thread: UNI-Thread 17/0 Trico
Sight bob/float: 8mm polystyrene ball
Sight bob casing: Section of lady's tights
Body: Pale green glister dubbing
Rib: Olive Flexi-Floss
Thorax: Dark green glister dubbing
Hackle: Black rooster saddle feather
Step 1: Run the thread as shown. It's not that important about being neat at this stage!
Step 2: Select a poly-ball of the correct dimensions to ensure the hook floats.
This one is 8mm. I find this is fine to float size 10 and 12 hooks and easy to see at distance.
Step 3: Cut a small section of tights or stockings. Get permission first.
Step 4: Wrap the poly-ball in the stocking material like this.....
Step 5: Lash the package to the shank of the hook in approximately this position.
You can adjust it up or down at this stage.
Step 6: Whip the stocking down the shank for a few mm and trim off the waste.
Step 7: Catch in the flexi-floss just below the stocking.
Step 8: Whip the flexi-floss down to a position around the bend of the hook.
Then dub on a small pinch of pale green glister dubbing.
Step 9: Wind the dubbing back up to and slightly past the end of the whipped over stocking.
The flexi-floss is still there BTW but it seems to have moved behind the vice jaws here!
Step 10: Wind the flexi-floss rib back up in a reverse direction and tie off under the poly-ball.
Step 11: Dub on some darker green glister dubbing and form a thorax.
Step 12: At this point, make horizontal rotating turns of thread around the base of the poly-ball to construct a wing post.
Make an over-hand knot to secure the thread and then re-position the hook eye down in the vice.
Step 13: Catch in a black rooster saddle feather to the wing post.
Step 14: Make several turns of hackle underneath one another until desired result is achieved.
Step 15: Whip finish whilst hook is vertical and then return to normal position.
Apply a small dab of super-glue around the base of the wing-post and hackle for strength.
Take care not to bugger up the hackle with glue.
This fly will not sink no matter what and doesn't require any form of floatant solution or preparation.
Hope this is of use to you all!
Rich
