Can I be a bit provocative? I recently came across this web site: troutbitten.com/2016/02/03/the-mono-rig-and-why-fly-line-sucks/ where he uses 20lb Maxima Chameleon line as his main, working line, though he still has it connected to a fly line on the reel! He then has a tapered leader with indicator sections down to the tippet. He uses this set-up for a range of techniques. His nymphing set up is actually similar to the one I use for Tenkara nymphing, though I use the Tenkara line as the indicator. So could you use all the Tenkara methods with this set-up? I've got a Hardy Jet 10ft 3wt rod and am thinking of dispensing with the fly line altogether, using 0.5mmm braided fishing line on a small 2/3wt reel, then connecting this to his 20lb Maxima line, tapered leader then classic Tenkara tippets. I'm hoping that this 3wt rod would be whippy enough to be able to cast out even a light dry fly. This could have many of the advantages of Tenkara, but with the psychological comfort of having a reel. Any comments?

Judging from the literature I think that similar tackle has been used successfully by some anglers ever since it became fashionable to put a reel and rings on a fly rod in the nineteenth century.Fairly light, level, dressed silk reel lines and tapered silkworm gut casting lines were still readily available when I started fly fishing in the 1950s, and more recently we have had French leaders,'leader to hand', etc. I just fish in ways I find entertaining.
Chris.
Level dressed silk lines down to .65mm diameter are still available from Phoenix Lines. In the past I have made quite reasonable lines from braided backing, dressed with a mixture of boiled linseed oil and yacht varnish.

My first fly rod (split cane) was given to me by my uncle over 50 years ago and came with a braided silk level fly line on a JW Young condex fly reel. I still have the reel and it works as well as it did then but I sold the rod many years ago.
