I'm finding it a slog to drive up from Hertfordshire to Ilkley to fish the Wharfe, so am looking for something a bit nearer, and with easier wading. I've been looking into the Leek and District Fly Fishing Association that has 3 miles of the upper Dove, 3 miles in Dovedale and a short stretch just below Rocester on the Dove and Churnet. There are also the fifty nine fly fishing club that has a 2 1/2 mile stretch on the upper Dove and also the Derby Railway club that has a couple of stretches near Rocester plus a stretch at Darley Dale on the Derwent. Does anyone have any experience of these waters?
Other clubs are available but they are very expensive with a long waiting list.
Regards,
Frank

Hi Frank I'm a member of the 59er's and I can recommend the club and the fishing. Although we have a no wading policy it does not deter from the fishing. I use a telescopic tenkara rod as some of the best wild brown and grayling fishing takes place in the wooded beats of Milldale.
I was a member of the Leek and District, great fishing on the Dove but spoilt by too many walkers. I have several friends who are members of the Railway Club for one reason (or one beat) and that is fishing a small stretch of the Dove at Norbury, down stream from the weir.
I believe we (59er's) may have a couple of vacancy's for next season, if you want I can supply you with contact details.

Hi Paul,
Many thanks for the info. I've considered the 59 club but I need to have some reasonably priced accommodation nearby and the nearest I could find was in Ashbourne. Being a popular tourist area, accommodation seems to be difficult to find, especially if I wait until close to the fishing time so that the weather/river levels are favourable.

I've just noticed that in 2015 you posted a message about blanking on the Cromford stretch of the Derwent. Did you have any luck with finding successful flies? After a lot of thought, I've just joined the club and I hope I'll be a bit more successful!

Frank

Hi Frank
Hope you're well.
Yes I have fished the Derwent since I posted that report and caught. I think was my presentation rather than the fly patterns. Pleased to hear you joined 'the club' Is that the 59ers or Cromford Fly Fishers?
regards Paul

Hi Paul,
It's the Cromford club I've joined. It looks very similar to the Wharfe that I'm used to - a spate river - and a bit closer than the upper Dove. They also allow a wide range of fishing styles and I admit to enjoying trotting for grayling in the winter when the river si a bit too high for fly fishing. I'm hoping to pop up in March to give Tenkara a go with a team of North country spiders, probably using a Ishigaki Kebari as dropper, as I found that very good on the Wharfe.
Regards,
Frank

Hi Paul,
I've fished at Cromford a few times but haven't given Tenkara a real go - both because until recently the river has been quite high and I've caught some big fish - 6 to 8lbs so I'm a bit concerned about my Tenkara rod. If I hooked one of those I wouldn't want to lose it. I was going to wait until autumn to target the grayling. What do you think?
Regards,
Frank
