I was wondering whether any fellow Tenkara fisherman have had any negativity aimed at them when using Tenkara.
Last year I was fishing the river coln at Fairford, which I regularly fish throughout the season. There were a number of fly fisherman on one particular day whom were fishing weston style road and reel. I could sense one gentleman watching me as a waded and fished through a section of river. One getting out of the pool to continue downstream the gentleman remarked that Tenkara was not traditional fly fishing and that it was easier. To that I handed the gentleman my tenkara rod and volunteered him to have a go. The gentleman jested under his breath but remarkably obliged. Within 5 minutes the gentleman got out of the river, walked over to where I was sitting a said "its not as easy as it looks". I then spend the next 4 hours with the gentleman teaching him the basic casting stroke and giving him hints.
Within 30 minutes the gentleman was like a child in a candy shop, with a smile beaming from ear to ear. he had caught his first wild trout using a tenkara rod and spend that next 3 hours winkling out wild brown trout from pools and sections of the river he would not normally target.
I am 30 and the gentleman in question was retired and in his later 60's early 70's the satisfactory I got from those 4 hours will stay with me for a long time. The gentleman was extremely grateful and was adamant that he would buy me some lunch. All in all I spent 6 hours with the gentleman and regularly get updates on his latest tenkara adventures.
As tenkara fisherman I feel I should help spread the word and assist people that have negativity towards Tenkara. If the gentleman had never taken up my offer, he would not have had the profound enjoyment that I was able to assist with.
Kind Regards
