Hi folks,
Firstly, thanks for accepting me into the forum and many thanks in advance for the advice, cost and time savings that you will save me.
I am an ultra light backpacker. In my youth I have fished for poke mostly but have fished a little in the sea and for tiddlers in a wee stream in Mull, which was awesome fun.
My main purpose of fishing now is to supplement my food and have a little fun. I originally thought of a travel rod and a light reel but the best I could do was about 200g per item. Then there would be some tackle. I estimate 600-700g total outfit. I was only thinking like that as the rod would be light and shortish. I am not saying I only wanted to spin. I am open to any method that will produce a fish, especially if I can eat it.
Through my trawling on the World Wide Web I stumbled upon Tenkara, Tanago and Keiryu rods and methods and I was blown away by the weight savings and simplicity. It reminded me of the fun times I had in Mull.
So, I have no experience fly fishing but happy to have a bash. In time I may catch something while having fun. It would be nice if I was able to use the rod for other methods as it would give me more options. A bit of bait or float..... Probably mostly on little streams, rivers or at a lochan.
I realise this is a big ask but the main purpose is a food supplement to the staples I carry so that I need to re supply less on longer hikes. I wouldn't be able to relay on it as a food source.
Since looking at the whole Tenkara thing I am really looking forward to it, may actually walk less and fish more!
Also, this will be taking place in Scotland and there is a chance I may get shot as a poacher!
With the advertised weights I will probably carry it on most overnight trips. Mostly summer as that's when I will have the time with the level of light available.
So it's a tall order and I know I'm asking a lot. I also apologise for the length of the post. Blame the Scottish guy I saw reviewing a rod on YouTube, he said u guys were awesome at advice.
