One of the members of the club where I am water keeper has been told he risks his EA license by catching grayling on a fly out of season. I suggested that if you were trotting with maggots that might be an issue but that with a fly it was quite difficult to get grayling aware that they were o/s! Any views?

Toneman I cannot see and do not believe that catching grayling on fly oos can be proven to be illegal where the water has mixed species in it. To be honest, even bait fishing if allowed for trout could lead to oos catches of grayling. If the water had grayling only then that would be a different matter completely but I do not know if such a thing exists! If it could be proved that you could see that the fish you were after was clearly a grayling and you went on to catch it oos then you would be in big trouble. Around here you have more chance of seeing a dodo than a bailiff so would not worry to much. Hope this helps. We all catch grayling accidentally and I do not think the EA seem worried unduly. Cheers Glyn
