I'm very new to tenkara and I've purchased my first rod an ESO 410cm 6:4 off another forum member. The river is unfishable at the moment with all of the rain we had yesterday and last night so haven't been able to get out and try the method.
I have a general wondering about level lines, I got given a 12' fluorocarbon level line with the rod I bought but can i not just use a length of suitable diameter mono as a level line also?
I'm thinking of the Sunset Amnesia mono in the hi vis orange colour so that it would make a good sighter.
Or does fluorocarbon just have better qualities over mono?
TIA
Rich

Welcome to the forum
From what I have found, fluro line is more dense than normal mono, this means for the same diameter line you will be able to cope better with wind, get better casting action. With normal mono you will have les sag, so keeping the line off the water will be a little easier.
Give it a try if you don't like it you can always order some branded level line if you are wanting to try differing lengths.

Thanks Monkey, another question, how do the level line sizes such as #3 or #4 convert to a lines breaking strain or diameter? Cheers

For a rough conversion from Japanese line size to breaking strain, multiply by 4 to get pounds, so a #3 line is about 12 lbs breaking strength.
Diameters are exact and standardized. #3 line is .285mm, #3.5 is .310mm and #4 is .330mm.

Chris is absolutely right. Generally look for diameter rather than breaking strain. If the 12ft line you got with the rod has pink and orange blocks of colour it will be Sunline BMS which rates as the following: Standard Dia.(mm) | 0.235 | 0.260 | 0.285 | 0.310 | 0.330 | Strength(lb) | 8 | 10 | 12 | 14 | 16 | Line Size(#) | 2 | 2.5 | 3 | 3.5 | 4 |

By far the best is fluro level lines with a length of either fluro or mono for your cast. However Esoteric Tackle have recently stocked Fujino tapered mono lines. Although I have got two I have yet to try them. There is plenty of information and advice on level lines within the pages of this site. Good Luck.

I've tried a Fujino level line & it casts superbly but I find it is not as good for holding off the water as a 2 or 3 weight level fluorocarbon line.

New fluorocarbon level lines by Line Systems and YGK are very well died and the visibility is not inferior to Fujino nylon lines.
