I purchased Vol 2 at the BFFI on Saturday and saw it through on Sunday afternoon.
And I must say that it is a well presented DVD from a couple of guys who obviously love all aspects of Tenkara. I found the relaxed style of conversations with the local Kabari tyers really interesting, and the names given to flies a refreshing change to how we do things over here.
I will be watching this a few times in the future, it's a great way of exploring the art of Tenkara. Well done to all involved.

Volume 2 is now available to buy online - if you have a Blu-ray player it is definitely worth taking that option but we made sure to make it available on DVD too of course. Send me my copy

Excellent production! Slick photography, voice over & editing. I would have liked to see a bit more of the actual fishing in Japan but otherwise first class.

Cheers Dave - we had to make strict editorial decisions on how much time to dedicate to filming tying/interviews vs filming fishing vs. actually learning the stuff from the anglers out there too The next DVD will feature more "proof of concept" fishing allied to particular presentation techniques that link to structural/design aspects of each fly. (N.B. as it was we would do 12 hour days of fishing/filming then some more filming in the evening - followed by copying and filing all of the video footage files onto backed-up media and then up every few hours in the night to swap batteries that needed to be re-charged every day for filming/sound recording the following day)

It actually raises a really good point Dave - that this DVD, coupled with the upcoming one and also a separate e-book all combine together to cover the framework for fly design and selection. So the aim of this one is to provide a base-collection of sound flies, how to tie them and to introduce some of the concepts behind their design - at the same time as giving a flavour of the culture in which they have arisen. In that respect it is very focused (as it needs to be to get the lessons in). As an insight, the current DVD's main feature is 1hr and 25 mins long (not including bonus chapters). So, as an editor, which of the messages about fly design could be dropped in order to fit more fishing into the film... Over time we will build up more and more fishing footage in Japan, at home and elsewhere - and we will work hard at it whilst enjoying every minute too

And I should say I very much value your feedback Dave.

Have you considered a digital version for download or online streaming?

My copy arrived today. Watched it this very evening. I thought it was fantastic. All so different and very interesting. Well done PG & JP. I can recommend it. Still can not get out on the Ribble as it remains too high.

Have you considered a digital version for download or online streaming? Yes, and we hope to go down that route. Unfortunately, we had hoped to use the same platform to supply both e-book and video, but the sheer size of 90 minute HD video files (even at 720 p) makes it incredibly expensive and we just don't sell enough units to pay those subscription bills. That would leave us with using separate platforms for each as well as investment in marketing and customer relationship management software to generate a sufficiently consistent income stream to be in with a chance of meeting the subscription fees for providing streaming or downloads. For such niche material it is a big risk to dramatically increase our outgoing costs especially when you consider that we currently lose money overall in order to produce our tenkara DVDs

Received my copy earlier this week and have looked at it all twice over and thoroughly enjoyed it all. Excellent quality of filming as previously stated. Like Dave S I would liked to have seen more actual fishing but can understand your comments as to that aspect. Also some of the conversations were quite protracted .You mention an e-book Paul. What is the state of play as far as that goes please? Frustration reigns here with swollen rivers and no fishing! Thanks to PG and JP for all your considerable efforts and expense that go towards producing this material for our enjoyment. Glynn

Hi Glynn, I just did a restructure and included some additional sections of the ebook late last night while the rest of the family were in bed There are probably two more sections that we (JP and me) need to collaborate on and I need to draw probably another half dozen diagrams. Then JP can get to work on both photographic as well as design and layout work. If everything else in life runs OK for us, we aim to get it out in the next 2 months - which leaves us the opportunity for filming some pickup sequences to the existing material on DVD Vol. 3 as well as the basis for 2 more DVDs during a very special filming trip that we are taking with Dean in May. More details will follow on that soon too.

Also, I forgot to say Glynn, that fantastic and strange fly that I posted about months ago (but couldn't let out of the bag ahead of the DVD) is Himano-san‘s 'Almost kebari' that he ties in Vol. 2.
He was very generous to do that tying sequence under the glare of two cameras as he is long sighted and didn't have his glasses or magnifying visor - so he was basically tying by touch. I think it will be a barnstormer on the Usk and the Wye for you - and it only uses one material (apart from the tying thread)

Paul Thank you for all that additional information. Looking forward to the e-book when it is ready. As for tying a fly by touch, then he is a hero. I can tie a knot in the dark and that is about it! All the best Glyn

My copy arrived this morning and I have watched it through twice already! I very much like the relaxed style of presentation and the slick production. The way the conversations give an insight into the people and culture that produce these flies made this so much more that a fly tying instructional video. My favourite quote, that illustrates the different cultural perspectives, was Go Ishii “You came all the way from England to ask that question?” I am looking forward to the next volume in this excellent series.

One of my favourite quotes too I don't know if it is easy to pick out but he says 'what's the matter with you?' right after that. We had such a good time hanging out with those guys and they are really awesome anglers too. Thank you for your kind comments Alan, they are very much appreciated and really valuable.
