A few months ago when the weather was much kinder I set off to 'my' Tenkara stone (a flat top stone just at the right position for the river without the need of waders). When I arrived a guy was fishing just a few yards away from 'my' stone. So I had a few moments chat with him. He was fishing a swim feeder on a 12 foot rod a way down stream of where I wanted to be. He told me he'd been there for 2 1/2 hours without a touch. I asked if me minded my just fishing a little upstream on 'my' stone? 'No you go for it' he replied. When I told him I'd be using flies, he said 'Oh you'll be wading then' 'No, I'm on that stone'. After setting up the T rod under a watching eye, he shouted 'What's that then, i thought you were fly fishing'? I went over and explained about Tenkara, showed him the rod and saw a smile at the corner of his mouth, you've seen it, we all have. So off to 'my' stone and second cast a small brownie of 8-10 inch. A few casts later, a second fish about the same, followed quickly by a third. Next thing I know the guy is stood at my shoulder asking me 'where do you get them things? are the expensive? how can I do that? The next fish, I handed him the rod and let him bring the fish in and I took the line and landed the fish. He was buzzing by now and getting right into it promising to find out about this new type of fishing. I hope he did take up this so simple way of fishing, maybe one day I'll meet him again and see if he joined the Tenkara nuts.
