excellent fly. I think the reversed hackle treatment could be applied to many of our traditional spider patterns.

very nice fly paragon - personally, I prefer a slightly longer body, shame to waste so much hook.

On the other hand, why use 6 inches of silk when 4 would do?

There must be a touch of the Yorkshire in you Chris! ...Do I need to run for cover now?

I almost wrote "My Scottish ancestors would say..." but I didn't want to have to run for cover.

A very nice fly indeed.
I have tied several traditional spiders in the Tenkara style and I find them to be very, very effective when fishing in the seams and even manipulating them through the slower parts of the water. My favourites have to be (in no particular order):
Black Spider Sakasa Kebari Grouse and Cardinal Sakasa Kebari (with peacock herl thorax) Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear Sakasa Kebari Grouse and Yellow Sakasa Kebari (with peacock herl thorax)
Think I need to add Snipe and Purple to this list.
Cheers,
CP

Don't forget the Partridge and Orange or the Waterhen Bloa. Both good Spiders.

Just to add a little to the discussion I use Pearsalls floss which is more of a bluey purple and also use the outer coverts of a starling wing which I guess makes it a Starling and purple! That feather is a lot darker and works well too plus it is very soft and mobile ( and I have run out of snipe!!) Tight lines Glyn
