I know this is a UK Tenkara forum but as I am in the USA for the 3 months thought I would add a tale and a few photos of my Summer so far. We live in Northern Minnesota and good trout fishing is about 300 miles south of us so I did a little fishing for 'Pan Fish'. The first photo is a Blue Gill caught in the local State Park on a Klinkhammer. We have just returned from a 2 week trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota and Montana. I just had one session with Tenkara in Montana (I was with my UK family so only got away from our vacation home to fish once) on a beautiful Mountain Stream at about 7000 feet. We had nearly a week in South Dakota before the family arrived so managed to catch all 3 of the 'native' trout Brook, Brown and Rainbow on Tenkara . Attachment Deleted

Brilliant! Tenkara is great for Bluegills as my mate Steve is finding out at the moment in Florida. I love Brookies, perfect targets for Tenkara.

Thanks Guys some of the streams in Montana & S. Dakota are just perfect for Tenkara. Next year we will leave the visitors behind and concentrate on more fishing. About to try my hand a Small Mouth Bass fishing from a canoe in one of our local lakes, hopefully photos to follow. Glad Yorkshire has had some rain at last.

The rain we've had in East Yorkshire has had no effect on the desperately low water levels!!!! Nevertheless I managed just over 30 wild browns in 3 hours today from Forge Valley on the Derwent. Tenkara is great in low water as long as you can get close enough to the fish since there is no splashing fly line!

Trout fishing in this part of Minnesota is pretty much 'put and take' except for one stream that has naturally reproducing brook trout. I went to the closest stream, the Clearwater River about 70 miles from my house hoping to catch a trout or two. Well no trout for me! All kinds of little tiddlers a few 'pan' fish and whatever the fish is in the photograph attacked my Klinkhammer constantly. The local chapter of TU (Trout Unlimited akin to our WTT) said I should have fished with nymphs......ah well next time . Attachment Deleted

The fish in your photo is a creek chub. They are aggressive, take flies well, fight hard for their size and are good tenkara quarry for anglers who do not feel that trout are the only fish worth catching.

Back in Montana for a week of fishing. Weather not really cooperating - HOT. Went out yesterday evening and caught this little would be escapee. Early rising will be the order of the day to beat the heat.

All the best in Montana. Soda Bute Creek in the North East of Yellowstone Park is brilliant Tenkara water if you get a chance to go there.

Thanks for that info Dave. The Soda Butte Creek is about 3 1/2 hours from me! I'm staying at Big Sky which is close to the Gallatin River. I may try to get up early and drive to the Soda, YNP guides are saying it is fishing well.
