Two days this week, three different Calder tributaries. Urban fishing on Wednesday with a friend who fished 'western'. Lots of fish rising in the main river although almost all fell to nymphs. My friend was very successful with Czech nymph style fishing. We both lost count but we probably had 60 fish between us although he did get twice as many as me! I ended up with mostly small trout and he lots of grayling including one or two sizable beasts. My grayling were all small except the damaged one in the photo, the chewed fish swam off quite powerfully but you have to wonder how long it will survive with that kind of injury . Thursday was a different day in every respect, not urban, no grayling and 'just' 5 fish to hand. Beautiful hill stream and although 4 out of the 5 fell to dry flies there were no observable rises. I'm just constantly impressed with the beauty of a lot of the streams, becks and rivers here in Yorkshire. Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

Late start today. Fished the Calder near Copley. Rained the whole time. River was slowly rising and colouring. No surface action at all, I netted 2 grayling first a 10 incher and 2nd was a pretty chubby 15 incher. Managed to slip down a muddy bank and was save a ducking by my wading staff. However, the wading staff is now a goner, ah well and so it goes.......

msp, You did well venturing out on such a day and to catch fish as well. Shows the dangers we fisherman have to face. Hope you can lay your hands on another wading staff. Take care.

First try using Tenkara today on the Calder. What a day to start! The wind was howling, so I put on a 9ft furled leader and a olive dry fly. It was hard work because of the wind, but I managed 2 brownies and one grayling. They were all small but very welcome. I missed quite a few takes. I can't wait to give it another try with hopefully less wind. Ray

Well done! It's always a bit of a nightmare in the wind but you caught fish! That's what matters.

Second time out with Tenkara rod and ended up with 9 grayling and 5 trout. It was the first time using a level line (an Esoteric Sublime BMS flourocarbon) I fished a size 14 black para emerger and a size 16 beaded hares ear nymph. All but 2 of the fish came to the nymph. I bumped off quite a few fish. Really enjoyed it and really pleased with the action I had. Thanks for the help everyone.

First day on the Calder since getting back from the US. Beautiful day and some water in the River! The River was slightly coloured but all fish fell to dry flies. It didn't seem to matter which fly, I just changed from time to time and the Grayling would have another look and sometimes eat the fly. Close to 20 Grayling in 3 1/2 hours all from one pool my other favourite areas did not produce or there were other anglers taking my fish. No brown trout today which is a first this Fall.

A couple of sessions this week one on the main river and one on 2 of the Tribs. On both outings I met other fly fishermen. There was one angler by the footbridge on the Colne, he was fishing spiders so I left him to it and went further downstream. I picked up one Grayling and one WBT then the angler from the bridge appeared just upstream from me so after a chat (he had been on the river 2 hours and was yet to catch) I went back to the footbridge weir to see what nymphing could produce. Sure enough I quickly caught and landed 2 WBT and then a pretty big Grayling took the point nymph (a peeping caddis) and set off downstream. I struggled to follow and tried to guide him into quieter water but I lost him and I'm afraid to say the peeping caddis. It as been quite a while since I left a fly in an escapee. Palomar knot it wasn't! Five grayling and 6 WBT landed and a few dropped off. Wednesday on the main river was positively crowded! Two other fly anglers and 6 coarse fishermen/kids between Standard Weir and the Copley rail viaducts. I moved around and ended up just squeaking into double figures. The fish were generally small although one was probably 9 inches and the only WBT amongst them was larger. Urban fly fishing is getting more popular, I really should have expected there to be folks about during the Christmas break. Fortunately I do have places to go where I rarely see other fishermen. After a personal best (numbers of fish caught in 1 1/2 hours) on a Calder tributary last week it was with some trepidation that I tackled the same river this morning. I hadn't planned to go there but I needed to return some shopping so why not face my demons and fish. l had another kind of personal best today number of fish not brought to hand! I ended the short session with just 2 nice grayling and 1 OOS WBT but lost at least 15 maybe 20, some due to the overhanging trees interfering with my handlining and others just plain dropped off. I changed the fly a couple of times but clearly dropsy was the name of the game today. Then to add insult to injury the river became very coloured and appeared to me to rise two or 3 inches. Once the colour arrived that was the end of the catching. I have no idea why the river was suddenly coloured it was such a beautiful, if chilly day and the EA river level at 1830 actually showed a slight drop. Ah well I guess thats fishing..... After a blank on a highish and coloured Pickering Beck on Tuesday I had a better day yesterday. Very slow start in usually successful places so moved on and it turned out to be a good day on the Calder system. I finally adopted Daves "longer rod, shorter line" strategy it makes life much easier, very few lost fish. In order to cover plenty of water I have taken to fishing with a single nymph under a sedge pattern using the sedge as an indicator (sorry purists!) this has proved pretty rewarding. However, I finally had to quit fishing as trout were attacking the dry! The last wbt on the dry was well over a pound so time to hit the M62. I had 15 fish mostly Grayling including the fish below which at a little over 15 inches is my biggest Grayling on a T Rod to date. Attachment Deleted
