Thanks to orangeotter for introducing me to this forum. I was privileged to fish 2 days with orangeotter in Wales a few years ago. His teaching greatly influenced my fishing. I am just beginning with Tenkara thanks to oo and I hope to learn from you fellows how to improve my skills; always learning! Tennesse vol

Welcome!
I’m sure most on this forum would echo Paul’s sentiments. We’d love to see some pictures and hear about your local waters (and their inhabitants).
All the best, JP.

Welcome again !
Several sites exist but the information you'll gain from our forum members is incredible, everyone was so encouraging to me when I started.
You'll find that your favourite spiders work and don't forget those deadly little nymphs you showed me a couple of years ago.
Have fun !

Welcome from me also. I reiterate all of the comments above. I shall be spending a month in Michigan this June and will be trying Tenkara as well as other fly fishing for sure somewhere and perhaps spreading the word in that area. Enjoy the forum!

orangeotter I think I owe you some of the midges I used on the River Dee. Is your mailing address the same? I will send you some of my best!

I purchased my first Tenkara rod yesterday. I decided on the Ito, 13 to 14 feet. I fish a lot of open waters below our TVA dams. Any suggestions?

My first suggestion Ron would not to be extreme with leader length, especially if decent sized fish are possible. With your rod I'd be using a 10ft furled leader + a 3-4 ft level nylon tippet. This will bring good fish within netting range. I find that this leader/rod ratio also give good fly control without stretching my arm too high.
Others will have other advice I'm sure.
Good luck on your first trip.

Louis' advice is a good starting point. If you’re new to tenkara but not new to fly fishing you’ll soon find that many of your existing skills are transferrable. I hear there are some big fish to be had in those TVA tailwaters so your fixed line fish-playing may end up being a baptism of fire! If you know the waters you’ll be fishing well it may be worth targeting somewhere you’re sure holds plenty of small fish to hone your skills. Have a look at this video to see a good trout of around 20” landed on the Ito rod; For further reading on fish-playing with a tenkara rod see here; www.discovertenkara.co.uk/about-tenkara/playing-fish/Hope this helps, JP

Thanks men! Hopefully I can get out and give it a try in a few weeks. I am waiting on it to arrive and find a time to break it in. I also purchased a book on Tenkara fishing which is helpful. Thanks again. I will keep you posted as to my progress.

Off to fish Little River in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee tomorrow with my new Tenkara Ito rod. The local fishing report is not good so it will be a good initial test for me in learning the technique. I have prepared several 4 foot 6x tippets to go with the 10 foot furled line. I will report on my baptism into Tenkara! Thanks for the information and help!

My initiation to Tenkara was not the greatest of successes since I landed only 2 fish and had a chance at 2 more but missed them. The river I was fishing has experienced some significant water flow over the past month and the fishing report was for a tough day of attracting fish. My fishing buddy also tried Tenkara for the first time and had no strikes. He is more of a novice than me and he will catch on once we get better conditions. I am looking forward to getting access once again to my favorite rivers and using Tenkara there. It is different than the techniques to which I am accustomed to using with my traditional fly rods and reels. I did use the 10 foot furled line with a 4 foot 6x tippet. Sorry that I have no pictures to send today, but I will collect some of my favorite fishing venues and post them later.
