Back to the Hodder yesterday. Cold, windy, 11 degrees it said on the car. As I had my lunch on arrival I was surprised to see a couple of rises. I intended to go further downstream and work back so leaving those fish. The wind caused all sorts of problems for me as I was only fishing dry. I caught fish in every pool I cast into. I lost about 6 six, always the better ones, that didn't get hooked properly. That said I finished with 12 Trout, one or two small but others good fish for the river, along with 4 Grayling. All on dry. More often than not I was able to cast to rising fish, others came up fro the fly. A good mix. There were a few flies about but for the life of me I could not tell you what they were taking. I saw all types of fly, but only singles, no great numbers. I was kept entertained by a large number of Swifts, Swallows, Martins, both House and Sand, they were working the river all afternoon. At one stage many birds were flying round a tree, they then departed up river together. I can only assume a "swarm" of fly moved away from the tree. Not seen that before! At the start I would not have thanked you to for being there, it was not pleasant. I even had to wear a coat and I was frozen to death at the end. Would not have missed it for a gold clock. For me, a great afternoons fishing.

Only started fishing Tenkara on the Ribble and Hodder a couple of months ago. I've not really done much trout fishing as I mainly fish for Salmon, so apart from a bit of spider fishing and a dabble with the dry fly that was about it. However Tenkara definitely puts a smile on your face and boy has it boosted my catch rates!! The minimum I've caught has been 15 brownies in 3 or 4 hours, but yesterday I had my best session yet with 27 brownies and a cracking 2lb grayling. The lad I was fishing with on rod and line had 5, guess what he has just ordered
Tenkara rod and a box of flies, it couldn't be simpler. Last week I let a mate have a go with the tenkara rod and he promptly hooks an lands a brownie of about 5lb, what a fish and what a fight on the tenkara rod, I had to say those immortal words - I think we need a bigger net! Who says tenkara is just for small fish

Well done. Which Tenkara rod were you using? David

I picked up one of the Tenkara USA Sato rods in the Jan Sale, clearly I've nothing to compare it with, but I'm really enjoying my fishing again with it. If it can handle that trout it will handle anything I catch, unless I connect with a silver tourist

Managed to get a couple of hours on the river yesterday. Cool wind but a pleasant day. Fish had moved from previous locations. I suspect the frost earlier in the week may have had something to do with that. As I returned to the car I saw some fish rising at the tail end of the pool. I waded careful and started to fish. I was using the new Karasu 400. (Great rod). I cast downstream and gently teased the fly back. I was lucky that I had the wind to my back. Very quickly fish were at the fly. I had swirls at the fly and all manner of plucks. I hooked four. Fish about 9" long. Time did not allow for me to fish any longer. As I left the river they were still rising. I was pleased I had not disturbed them all. I had two other fish using a French Leader. Fly was size16 Grub hook, 2mm bead, black cock hackle and black dubbing. Fished just below the surface. It looks a bit tatty now in the photo.
