I have a problem when I fish a 12ft leader and 5ft tippet. I have trouble getting the fish to where I can handle them or release them, Simon gets hold of his leader and pulls fish to him, I can get away with that if I use a 0.14 Stroft tippet but if I go any lighter for ex 0.12 Stroft I have been Brocken of with fish, any advice. Hi Coppernymph, suggest you have a look at my posting in 'small net', this solved my problem.
A danger of pulling big fish in by hand is that if the fly pulls out, it hits you at speed ( I know we should wear glasses).
Cheers,

Another danger is with wet ginked hands, getting a dropper fly in the finger whilst hand landing a fish, this has happened to me a few times over the years. As annoying as they are to fish with & as Orangeotter has pointed out, the only way i have found is with a long handled net, its just the endless catching on brambles & bankside vegatation that you have to live with.
Regards stevie

Guys,
If I ever catch a big fish...I'll play it hard trying to keep its head out of the water...or keep it on the surface as much as possible and use the leverage of the rod to really tire it out before attempting to hand line it in....assuming my knot doesn't come undone first of course.
tight lines

I too think that a long handled landing net is the answer. If you look at old photos of northern English trout fishers, you will see that up to about the 1950s the net cum wading staff was almost standard kit, and with good reason. A net shaft of four and a half feet will allow you to use a line plus tippet of up to six foot longer than your rod and still reach the fish. Anything longer and you have to resort to handlining, or run them ashore if there is a suitable place.
Handlining is alright if done carefully and the fish can still be 'played'. A short length of elastic twixt line and tippet helps slightly, but is a bit clumbsy and unpleasant to cast with light tenkara tackle , but then so are the weighted nymphs that most of us use.

Exactly; old fashioned, well tried and effective.

Also; this is actually a scoop net stuck on a stick with a wader stud screwed in the other end. Attachments:

Guys, I have found the old squash / badminton net is an excellent compromise....it has a reach of 68cm (2'2")...its much better than a scoop net.....and is attached to the back of your fishing jacket when not in use...so its good when you are scrambling through the undergrowth....I also take a wading staff with me as well. Found this: But it is very expensive at £85 plus postage... Looks like a solid bit of kit though.

Hi All, I have been working on a Tamo net with a longer handle. After looking at the trad tamo nets it seem that they where not designed for purpose. Having to bring the net to the fish seems to me wrong and bending down and putting the fish in the net also seemed weird.. Extra stress and time for the fish.. before you release it The net should be ready in the next couple of weeks, I shall post pics of the hole process once complete... Any ideas guys for a cheaper net than buying from T USA at $42... The size I am looking for is 24cm !!!! The combination of Scoop net and wading staff looks great ;D. My next project based on steam bending wood... Cheers Buglife

Hi Buglife
I did a search on eBay for "net replacement" in the fishing section and came up with a number of options. I'm sure one of them could be used.

I pulled the pictures off google images and then into a couple of French fishing shops. It was very late last night so not sure I could find them again.
