Monday 21 May 2012 – Pencaitland I’m using a single size 14 black bodied sakasa kebari with partridge neck hackles this evening….I’m starting at the first pool of the Birns Water that runs into the River Tyne….as I set up I see a few fish rising in the pool….after a couple of casts upstream and I’m into one….I take a photo and before I return it I check its adipose and tail fin for red colouration round the edges and I’m surprised…it’s the same marking as Cust. trout in the IOM…I never noticed these markings before…they don’t show in the photo because of the angle it was taken at I’m on the move I want to cover quite a lot of water this evening….I’m fishing downstream now tweaking the sakasa kebari as it moves down the pool… a tug and I miss….a bit further down the pool another pull…this time he’s on and have him to hand This is the run that I caught the little fella in Birns Water further upstream Still on Birns Water but this is as far as I'm going tonight None of the fish are big but they are welcome I can tell you as I’ve blanked on my last three outings….I keep on the move and walk about a mile upstream in total…then head back….I’m now on the River Tyne and using an eyeless hook that Cust. kindly gave me a few to tie up….last upstream cast of the evening and a trout takes and he’s in the net…I have in in my hand to take a photo but he jumps free back into the river…I thought I would lose him for sure as the hook is barbless but I hand line him in okay and even have a bit of difficulty getting the hook out of its mouth….it must be the weird angle of the hook that’s holding it Anyway it’s been a good evening’s fishing…a bit of reconnaissance…and a few fish as well…magic Tight lines Alex

Great report Alex. Fish at last! ...and on the eyeless hooks. I've only one packet of the Gossen's left and I can't get any more. I'm working on a different supplier. Still got some of the Gamakatsu's and someone is going to win a packet! It is amazing how well these hooks hold.

Monday 28 May 2012 – Pencaitland I’m using a single size 12 green bodied sakasa kebari with partridge neck hackles this evening….I'm going quite big as there are a lot of mayflies on the wing...I’m going to start at the first pool of the Birns Water that runs into the River Tyne, then work my way downstream on the River Tyne itself… as I cross the river I notice a fisherman sitting by the side of the pool on the River Tyne ledgering with a fly rod, fly line and a fly with three or four maggots weighed down by split shot....there are rises in the pool...so I ask him if he doesn't fancy going for them with the fly...he looks at me as if I'm daft and shows me a box of big white grubs...can't remember what he called them...told me where I could buy them though... then proceeded to tell me how he caught a six pound sea trout using this set up last season....well he's enjoying himself so I wish him tight lines and move up to the pool at Birns Water and try half a dozen casts there...no joy so I move downstream...I get a knock in the fast water on the first run I try...no connection...there's a few sporadic rises...good signs...at the head of the next pool...first cast and I get a pull...missed it...I can see a number of fish rising again at the head of the pool...I must have cast about a dozen times over the fish then decide to change the fly to a smaller one...I have some size 16 Clyde style flies....I stick one of these on...first cast a tug...next cast another pull...magic...I won't be blanking tonight I'm thinking....a couple of casts later then I'm in...drat he's off...a couple of minutes later then a good pull and fish is on and I lose it to a badly tied knot....I get another few knocks but now they're few and far between so I move downstream....it seems to be most of the fish are in the faster water this evening at the head of the pools...at the end of the evening I had at least 9 tugs on the line but didn't manage to land one of them....but I'm a happy chappie as at least I saw fish rising and got some interest from some. tight lines Alex

Monday 2 July 2012 - Pencaitland
Gave it a go early doors this morning...the river was in good condition...only slightly coloured but nothing to worry about...I started at the road bridge pool and fished upstream using a single Sawyer's Killer Bug....I caught two little 'uns...then I saw a rise and changed to a black size 14 sakasa kebari with a foam head to keep it on the surface...I caught another 2 on this method...again they were only about 4 " long

Our rivers would look well coming out of a Guinness tap. I'm not envious that you are getting some fishing in ... no not at all. *mutters*

Sunday 17 July 2012 - Pencaitland The river is clear and pretty much at normal level so I try with a single sakasa kebari fished upstream. I see a few rises just above the weir....one pull and the fly was quickly rejected The tree has fallen into the river since the last time I was here about a month ago...it's amazing how the dynamics of this pool has changed....but still no rises or offers. I see a few rises in the pool where the Tyne Water and Birns Water meet...at last I get one on the sakasa kabari...it's small but welcome all the same. It's getting a bit windy so I change from furled leader to a #4 clear level line and put on 2 spider patterns and work my way downstream....the spiders have done the trick...I land another 8 but there's all very small...don't know where the bigger fish have disappeared to....but it's a bit of action since I haven't been out for a while. tight lines Alex

Nice one Alex.
At least someones getting out & catching. I had a look at a few of the Derbyshire waters over the weekend & if the rain keeps off, i might just be able to have a dabble around mid week.
Regards Stevie.

Sunday 19 August 2012 - Clerkington Really warm bright and sunny and it's only 8am....I 'm going to fish a klinkhammer upstream for a while...I start at this run ....a few fish are rising but I don't tempt any...I move upstream and get a small one from this run I try above the dam and cover a few rising fish...but no offers...I decide to try the Gifford Water that runs into the Tyne a couple of hundred yards upstream....a herd of bullocks is crossing the Gifford just as I arrive...they come closer to me...and closer...and closer still....I bottle it and head into the Tyne and start fishing...the bullocks get bored and head off.... they're just a bunch of adolescent thugs and have no respect for their elders...I've never fished the Gifford Water before and here are a few shots of the river....I managed only one from this river...both fish today were only small. tight lines Alex

Beautiful looking water. I love bullocks they are such curious and yet such timid creatures. I've found a wave of the arm and a "Gerrrout'ov'it!!!!" in a loud authoritative voice usually sees them turn around and leg it.... Not for the feint hearted though, because if they are on a charge you'd better get out of the way quick!
I'm surprised you did not get more action from the dry on that water.

Guys, The East Lothian Angling Association had an article on their 2012 newsletter...this form of fishing is spreading fast...just thought I'd pass it on to you as an attachment for information. tight lines Alex Attachments:
