Thanks Glyn, your observation of that trick with the pectoral fins makes sense. A kind of suction cup effect, which is just what it feels like!
The BFFI is replacing fishing time this weekend. JP & PG's new video on the shopping list...
Only hope the dry weather continues. The rivers are looking much better!

Morning all On Dee from 15-19 for early trout. Can you recommend both tenkara & trad flies/nymphs? Mark

Hi Mark, other than Tenkara, I'd recommend a team of classic spiders,ie, Waterhen Bloa,Greenwell's Spider and Partridge and Orange - shouldn't fail if water is good. Strangely enough(or not), patterns like these are mainstays of the Esoteric kebari range and do very well, interestingly enough with silk eyes. I'll be fishing Tenkara as usual and concentrating with my favourite GRHE sakasa kebari, plus the Pheasant Tail version.
Good luck but it needs to fall - huge today, season opens next Tuesday....

I was fishing near Corwen early last week and the Dee was high but clear. By Thursday when I had business in Corwen the river was raging down and very coloured. All the tributaries I passed were full too. I hadn't noticed that much rain! There has been a lot more now so it is unlikely to clear by Tuesday.

Thanks Harry. Is there any guide to the maximum safe level for wading?

It all depends on your confidence and ability 0.80 to 0.85 on the Corwen Gauge is OK if you wade carefully and with a stick and you stay out of big pools. Gone are the days when I just jumped in and started fishing the legs will not take it.

Still on the subject of wading these are the Dee levels as at 08.00hrs today.
Bala 0.60m Corwen 0.78m Manley Hall 0.94m Bangor on Dee 13.03m Farndon 6.18m
For me Bala and Corwen are fishable, as the river is dropping Llangollen in my mind should be ok in a couple of hours time.

I agree with tubefly except that Llangollen Maelor is far better from 0.70 downwards. Maelor wading is fairly safe but the top reaches of Llangollen can be treacherous.
Wade carefully !

Thank you both. I now have a better idea what to look out for! Re wading: the recent clip posted by Simon about competition tactics had a cautionary end. A very tall England International, wading up to his chest, stepping into a hole just two feet from the bank and having to be rescued by the TV crew!

Hope to be on the Dee 16/3-19/3. Apart from one day with orangeotter on Dee at Llanderfel not clear as to which waters of Bala angling might suit tenkara. Based at Bala lakeside M

After spending a couple of hours blanking on the Ceiriog on an otherwise beautiful day, I moved around the corner to CADAC's Coed-yr-Allt beat on the Dee and eventually found fish on the nearside of a fast run. A good grayling on a beaded caddis pattern, followed a little later by a smallish grayling on a copper beaded nymph. In both cases the nymph was the lower of a duo fished NZ style. Both rivers were in excellent condition.

early days on the Dee: I had 3 hours this afternoon in what seemed to be perfect conditions. Despite this, only a few olives showed up and one fish rose. The bottom line is that I caught 2 decent grayling on my favourite GRHE sk but would have expected more (trout). Previous seasons have proved that you need to get into April before you can expect to catch much. Can I clarify that I'm referring to the Llangollen waters, it could be better higher up. Water temp' was only 48 farenheit but at least better than 44 the other day. One factor which may have affected my session was several goosanders departing as I arrived.
It can only get better !
Good luck to everyone on their first few trips of the new season...

In the last 2 weeks the Dee has really switched on - excellent Grannom and M.Brown last week, fish going nuts. I had a good session today on the Maelor water below Llangollen with 5 trout to 1lb. Despite recent good hatches it was fairly sparse today with only Grannom and Olives but fish still reacted. I was using my dressing of a Grannom SK - savage takes as fish whizzed about taking the hatching fly.
To get the best of the fishing we need to be on the water daily but not possible I guess.
I've had a good start to the season and hope for good things on the Ceiriog next week - well done dbl the other day !
