Hi. I’m a full time professional instructor & guide, qualified at the highest APGAI level to coach in salmon, trout, sea-trout, grayling & fly dressing. I’m also a member of the prestigious HARDY GREY’S Academy. I’m very proud to contribute regularly to TROUT & SALMON where you can share my experiences and learn how to dress killing patterns. Having over 50 years experience as a game angler I’ve fished all over Britain but my first love are the rivers and streams of Wales, the Marches and Scottish lowlands.. These regions have a fantastic tradition of fly dressing and my passion is to dress and use the traditional patterns of the great historic tiers. You can’t get much more traditional than Tenkara and I’m very excited to be able to use my skills and experience to offer a range of patterns, many of which are only obtainable at present from abroad. Some are Japanese classics in the reversed hackle Sakasa Kerabi style and others based on patterns which have proved highly successful for me whilst fly fishing in the normal style-I’m convinced they will work for you. I don’t believe we need too many patterns and that a well chosen selection will suffice. In addition to my range, I’m happy to offer a bespoke fly dressing service and will copy any patterns that are recommended but seemingly impossible to find. I believe that Tenkara will rapidly grow in popularity and I’ll be thrilled to help you. I know that the technique will give me a lot of pleasure. Thanks very much - I want to arrive at a condensed selection which really work, by my experience and feed back from others. I understand that the aim is to use minimal patterns.
I certainly know what works for me with conventional tackle so with modifications should do well with Tenkara.
I have good theoretical knowledge but need to get onto the water this week to test it.
Best wishes.

Beautiful flies, the grey duster is a gem.
Did you get a chance to flick a line out?

Certainly did, caught 3 good grayling and a trout on a dry Western Olive yesterday, quite a decent hatch of LDO and large Brook Duns. I'm heading for upper Dee tribs as soon as I can. They seem to be better suited to Tenkara than the main river.

Wonderful. Nice to see you had them on the dry.

You may be interested in my Western Olive emerger which incorporates a loop to which you attach the nymph tippet. The system works well and the pattern is a killer. I'm happy to supply at £2 or perhaps add a loop to your favourite patterns. The tying method is in Trout & Salmon, March issue ' an emerger for all seasons'.

I have the March issue of T&S at the side of me as i type orangeotter, i have the hooks, hackles, antron post & thread. My intension saturday morning is to pop into the tackle shop & see if they have the other materials & whip up a couple of your Western olives for myself. I fished with shop bought olive sedgehogs on lochs in Lewis last year & they had the very same body material that you have used for the thorax on your fly, loved how the material caught the light & caught the fish too!
You have also tied a selection of tenkara flies, the "zenmai" & an untitled fly that is a favourite of Yoshikazu Fujioko, these have a wonderfully long dramatic hackle. May i ask what type of hackle is used?
Regards Stevie.

The photography has lightened the hackle - it is a hen Plymouth Rock/Grizzle, ie, black/white or more accurately grey. I believe the Scots have a bird called' Scots Grey', probably similar. If you wish, I'll post you some to check out.

Thats very kind of you orangeotter, thankyou, but i would like to buy half a dozen of the untitled fly & half a dozen of the zenmai & also the same amount of your tenkara duster if possible please instead. They are tied superbly & would make a worthy addition to my fly box. A mix of size 16, 14 & 12's. May i ask what hooks you tie on?
Regards stevie.

Hi Stevie, thats very kind of you. The hook is the Partridge Classic spider which suits Tenkara very well.
Would you mind sending me a PM and we'll sort out the details.
Cheers, Louis

Hi Louis.
I have taken delivery of your wonderful flies. My first impressions are how consistantly tied & in proportion they all are. On closer inspection the quality of the head at the whip finish is flawless.( An area i always struggle in) The difference between an amateur & a true professional it would seem.
I will be looking forward to giving them a cast & seeing what the Derbyshire trout & grayling make of them. I will keep all on the forum posted.
They now take pride & place in my fly box.
Regards Stevie.
