Good luck with your return to fishing. Plenty of other waters in the Severn catchment apart from the main stem and some good water to practice on. The Rea is a nice stream but think of the Clun and Onny also plus the Welsh border streams. Enjoy your Tenkara Glyn

Hi shropshirelad and welcome to the forum. If you want to get a good picture of the borders rivers today you should have a look at Roger Smith's recent book: Flyfishing the Welsh Borderlands. It is published by Coch-y-Bonddu Books. Not cheap, but a goldmine of information by a very good angler. He also fishes tenkara on occasion!

Thanks Glyn and dbl I will be checking out that book. I will fish the Rea most frequently as it is closest and I will be looking towards Ludlow for a few sorties as well.
Luckily living in Wolverhampton I'm still close to the Welsh borders so fishing is pretty close to home.
I'm thinking of getting a go-pro camera so I can film my mishaps lol, will give my wife something to laugh at lol.

Jb Welcome to the forum. I suspect that Tenkara will prove perfect for the Dartmoor streams. Best way ever for picking pockets! Tight lines and enjoy your Tenkara Glyn

Originally from the North East but relocated to Somerset 16 years ago. Although Somerset/Devon and Dorset have some wonderful little rivers and streams, I wish the Tees and Swale were closer as they are now reserved for two to three trips a year when I visit family.

Welcome on board Dave, I never got round to the visit I'd promised myself to the Tees this summer; next year!

I've just joined up. I live in Bishop's Stortford on the Herts/Essex border so I don't know whether it is southern or eastern. Last year I bought a Daiwa LT39SF Tenkara rod and I also joined a club on the river Lark in Suffolk, a small chalk stream that last year was great for dry fly with my Tenkara rod. This year I'm also going to try nymphs and scuds early in the season before the streamer weed gets too thick. I've just bought a 12ft #4 Hi vis flurocarbon level line for this and being used to ESN, I've tied in a short stretch of cortland indicator mono then a 4 ft tapered leader to 0.12mm, 3-4ft roughly being the depth of the river. As well as trout, I've also had good sport with dace, chub and roach. There are perch in there but I haven't caught any yet. I'm also a member of the Ilkley angling club and get up there about 6 times a year for trout and grayling. I've not done much Tenkara there as it is pretty exposed and there has always been a fresh breeze/wind/gale. Whenever I've tried, the line just gets blown about, normally back into my face as the wind swirls round! There are also quite a few hefty trout there, which I've always lost on my #3 rod so I've been reluctant to try Tenkara as my rod is only rated for 1.5-2lb fish and I use a 0.12mm tippet to protect the rod tip. In the fast water there the fish run off like a train. So I've just bought a new 10ft 5# rod that I'll probably use for ESN, duo and dry fly.

Hi Fdking and welcome to the Forum I am definitely no expert, but I think you are worrying unnecessarily about the toughness of your rod. In my unfortunate experience, it is very easy to break the tip of a tenkara rod when you are on the bank setting it up or taking it down, beadheads can also take a toll on the rod if they strike the shaft in casting. However, in action, so long as you let the rod take the strain, it will be most unlikely to break. You will break off on your tippet, or straighten your hook long before your rod is in peril. Incidentally, I think you could use a stronger tippet. I assume yours is rated at about 3lb, but Tenkara USA sells as standard a tippet of about 4.5lb. You mention 2 concerns, high winds and heavy fish. This page from TenkaraBum about your rod and the video embedded in it might reassure you. It sounds a like a pretty powerful rod to me! Hope to hear of your success with it. www.tenkarabum.com/daiwa-tenkara-rods.html

Hi dbl, Many thanks for the comments and link. I use stroft 0.12mm line that is rated at 1.8kg, so around 4lb. I'm a bit worried about the rod tip and I'm having difficulty finding a source of spares. Daiwa UK got back to me only to say they had a few rods in stock, but no comment about spare tops. I specifically asked them if I could buy a spare tip and they never got back to me. I can buy one from the US - but costs about £50.
