Morning Adric. The flies that are working well at this time are lightly weighted nymphs, size 16 and smaller. Ptn; stripped quil nymphs in natural colours. Cannot recommend any Tenkara flies because I very seldom use them but any similar patterns would work, all our fishing is done is upstream never down and across. See you next Saturday.

First trip out today of 2016 but water quite high and strong east wind - not a touch although I found out later that someone had already fished my beat - such is life. Height was 0.43. Minimal fly seen and no rising fish.

First trip to the river this season with a rod. Arrived around Midday on the way home from work, overcast and cold but the river was perfect. Clear a good height and a good flow. Fished from the top of the fishery to castle mill bridge. With the flow being strong the Tenkara rod came into its own being able to target slower runs on the far side without being as effected by the drag. As with all rivers many of the pools have evolved over the closed season, some filling with gravel some getting deeper! But where were the fish? Eventually I contacted and landed my first of the season, deep down in a slower pool hard on the bottom, this one fell to a weighted black type nymph. I decided deep and depth charge type flies were best so I changed to a weighted peeping Cadis on a large hook, two good fish were hooked and lost due to the soft Tenkara rod not setting the larger hook, bust look for a finer large hook for larger flies? By 1330 I was on the way home, a very successful first outing. Simon.

Grabbed a couple of hours yesterday between the snow showers. Caught 5 on the ever trusty GRHE SK including a good Blue trout which are featuring in catches recently, escapees no doubt from the Chirk hatchery.
Only a couple of olives seen and no rising fish.
Water was good but weather appalling - a good chance to test my new Esoteric Strooan zoom rod, absolutely love it.
Roll on better weather !

Wednesday 4th May. It's strange being able to fish midweek. Ian and I arranged for him to join me today on his first trip this season on the Ceiriog. The sun was out; weather hot and the river in perfect condition. We arrived around 1100 and fished until 1400, hoping to to catch the hatch around 1300. Fly was popping off al the time we were there with fish being caught on the dry and nymph, sharing rods we kept one wet and the other dry. The first pool above the Aqueduct produced many fish mostly wild with only 1 stocky, and one small sea trout? Fish were caught the whole length up to the bridge, the Tenkara rods again giving us access to water that would be very difficult to fish with standard rods, another very good productive fishing trip. Please excuse the small spelling mistake on the video, should check before I post!
Fish caught: 18 wild fish 3 stocked fish 1 small sea trout?
Simon.
