UPDATE
A big thanks must go out to all those that have offered very helpful and sound advice on this thread.
Managed a well earned day out on the Hodder yesterday fishing 2 beats. Decided to go it alone with tenkara no rod and reel as back up just stick with it. After delivery of a #3.5 Orange Sunline Buttobi from Tungsten-beads-Plus and a #4 Sunline BMS from Esoteric Tackle I was determinded to give fluorocarbon a go. I setup the Seiryu with 9ft of #4 BMS and 3ft of tippet to a single pink klink and with all casting comments on board it went out like a dream! I found the less 'effort' I put into the cast the better it got and I was amazed at the presentation. The line control was also superb holding all of the leader and 2ft of tippet off the water with ease to give amazing drifts. All this was rewarded with a 15 inch seatrout first cast! The rod handled it well too. I managed up with 1 trout and 3 grayling to the dry and lost 2 other grayling shortly after the strike. I also tried the #4 line on a 11ft Masu I picked up 4 weeks ago but not had chance to use and with 7ft of leader and 2ft to dry then 3ft to nymph it cast perfect and again control was sublime. Caught a nice grayling and a trout on the nymph. I then tried the #3.5 line on my 12ft 7:3 Nano which I use for nymphing and found it very visible and was also rewarded with a 15 inch grayling from a fast run.
As well as really liking the Seiryu now I could start to understand the casting I also started to see the benefits Tenkara brings to dry fly and duo fishing with the delicacy and line control. I cant wait till next time out to practise my casting with the Seiryu!
On an extra note I was amazed with the Sunline BMS indoors it doesnt seem to stand out much but get it outside and the flashes of pink and orange in the clear leader glow! Great product!
Many thanks again to all who yielded advice
Jonathan

Hi Jonathon and all, sorry for not getting involved in this discussion before now and am glad to read that you have now cracked the casting and are beginning to get success. As others have said all rods from all brands are different just like any rod, reel and line set up. The same rated aftm rods of the same action I.e. Tip or mid tip etc. can differ tremendously. Although there are the numerical classifications used in Tenkara rods there cannot be for practical reasons be any uniformity between how stiff or how soft rod sections are or should be. The advise as with any rod is to try before you buy wherever possible. Tenkara Centre UK are extending the the numbers and range of retailers across the Britain and Europe in addition to attending almost all the fly fishing shows across the country to give anyone as much opportunity as possible to test any of our products and avoid the guess work of purely online sale. We have experienced that at first most people new to Tenkara feel a little more at ease with casting a stiffer rod but with more experience they then migrate more to a much softer action but as with all things everybody has their preferences. You will certainly feel the difference between our Seiryu and the Masu it will be interesting which you ultimately use the most! Keep fishing and the technique will improve as will your results but you seem to be doing pretty well know anyway, congratulations.
