Are you sure it was me? I've never used that knot because I doubt I could get the loop through the eye. I struggle enough with a single thickness!

You'd struggle with a palomar knot unless you have a very generous hook eye.
No problems with the eyeless hooks though were you tie in a loop to attach the tippet.
I use a palomar for tying steel leaders to line for pike fly fishing. Its very quick, neat & strong. (With mono) of course.
Regards Stevie.

Stevie, I never double up the line and try to pass it through....I pass it through the eye then thread it back...it works fine up to size 14...I'll try it tonight on a size 16...I don't go any lower than this...for now Cust, Maybe it wasn't you...I'm not sure now...but it was somebody from the forum I'm off to do some fishing tight lines Alex

Monday 18 June 2012
It's just before 6pm...there is a strong wind blowing down the reservoir so I decide to try the dap. I have 4' of level line attached to the lillian, then 12' of dapping floss and 3' of level line at the end of the floss...I then put on 2' of 4lb mono and a size 12 elk hair sedge....it works a dream... I fish down a stretch but don't raise a fish...no rises either....I head up to the top where it is shallower and try the dap their as well...there are a few rises in the middle but nothing near....I try a conventional cast with the floss as the wind has started to die down a bit...I can cast fine..didn't expect that...still no action...then the wind drops off completely and I'm now attacked by swarms of midges...millions of them...I already have Avon's Skin So Soft on as a repellent..but I splash on more...it's pretty uncomfortable and I'm not enjoying this experience so I collapse the rod and move back from whence I came....there's still a wave further down....when I get there the wind has died here and its a flat calm....damm midges....I splash on more SSS..if it wasn't for this I would have probably packed up by now.....calm down I've paid for a permit I'm here till dusk even if there are huge chunks out of my face and the wife doesn't recognise me when I eventually get home...I'm now on the furled leader with a klinkhammer....there's a rise at my fly but I miss it...half an hour later another rise..this time it's on....it comes out the water once and runs for the middle of the reservoir....I apply some side pressure and the fish turns...I'm impressed with how well the Yamame is handling this 3lb rainbow...the problem will be when I have to hand line it so that I can get it into the landing net...it's been on for a while now and it's pretty tired...I've got the landing net in the water...the 'bow is almost in then it turns and makes one last run...I'm holding the line in my left hand so there's no give and the line snaps and the fish is gone... Although the Yamame handled the 'bow very well...I think I'll stick to the conventional rod reel and line for the 'bows but I thing it will be great for smaller wild brown trout.

I'm introducing a father and son to the delights of fly fishing...heading up to Rosebery Reservoir for an afternoon on a boat....I'm gillying for the afternoon....I'll give the Yamame to the dad and the Iwana to the son....we'll fish for an hour then switch to traditional western fly fishing for an hour....then they can choose what method they want to continue with for the last part of the session....it'll be interesting to see how they get on...hope we hit some 'bows for the kids sake.....anyways the weather forecast is good for tomorrow bright and sunny...looking forward to it already. I'll post a report tomorrow and let you know how we get on
tight lines

I have a number of reservoirs around me and in a previous life have fished them with conventional tackle .... but Tenkara has ruined it for me ...lol .. Put it this way ... if i went shooting , which i do, and found a field full of rabbits staked out for me to shoot that would not be good ... or remotely sporting. That's how i now feel about stocked reservoirs, it's just a personal thing, i only fish in rivers now .. And now the Trout season is over i'm learning about Grayling ,,which is nice !

I've done the same route. Grayling are a fabulous fish to be catching through the winter.

my grandson grades Grayling by size ...silver princess or silver queen .... weight or length don't come in to it, he decides ... He has caught 2 in the last 3 weeks and thinks they are "trout with diamonds on" ... great to be 8 yrs old ...

Guys, The only reason I took them 'bow fishing from a boat was it was an easier introduction for me....it's harder to teach someone to river fish if they don't have any gear or waders....I'm a grayling convert as well This afternoon we caught nothing.... but the sun was shining and we all took a shot at rowing the boat....everybody enjoyed themselves and that's the main thing Alex

Can't knock the reservoirs for providing learning opportunities. Good stuff Alex.
