Alex.
I see what you mean by the forecast. I past your way earlier today on the 702 & the rain was terrible, had the wipers on full blast. If its any consolation to you it was the same all the way up the M6 & M74 & it only started to slacken off around Perth.
Nice report, its about the only saving grace, Considering the weather.
Regards Stevie.

Tuesday 20 March 2012 - Polton
I tried for a couple of hours; an hour before and an hour after work; fishing a single klinkhammer upstream then a Partridge and Orange fished downstream...I had three tugs but no connections....I didn't see all that many rises...only a few....the river was quite high but clear.

Wednesday 21 June 2012 I stop off on the way home from work on the Lasswade section of the river...I only have 40 minutes fishing time...that's what I like about tenkara fishing...you don't need a lot of gear so you can get on the river in gig time...I'm on a single size 16 partridge and orange tied sakasa kebari style.....the river is lovely and clear...loads of fly life but no rises...I work my way upstream...I come to a nice little run that has a nice right hand bend...looks inviting....I cast upstream and let the fly come round...after half a dozen casts or so I get my first tug on the line...my reaction is too slow...I cast again...another tug...I miss...aaargh...I try a third time ..another tug...again no hook up...a cast over it a fourth time and it takes again...I strike and nick it...for misses in a row...I must be getting old....needless to say the fly is now ignored.... I see a number of rises at the tail of the pool right under the overhanging branches of a tree....there is less than 2' clearance..I try the bow and arrow cast...only managed to get through a couple of times the other luckily fell short and not up the tree...I decided to wade a bit closer and collapse two sections of the rod....my 12' Iwana is now around 7' and I get through the gap without too much problem...a few splashes at the fly then a couple of cast later I connect...it's a nice fish around 3/4 lb...it takes a leap at the same time as I as extending my rod to get some leverage...then its off....It's just not been my day...but an eventful 40 minutes of fishing all the same tight lines Alex

Fished my local stretch running through penicuik to auchendinny yestarday and l Had the best day I've ever had trout fishing in over 18 years. I fished for a good 6 hours straight on one fly only as I wanted a challenge .. I used only a daddy longlegs and ended up with a grand total of 17 brown trout biggest was about 10oz the rest varied between 6 to 9oz's the river was a bit higher than usual and had some good pace to it and very murky, but an absolute cracking day.

Sounds like a day to remember, makes me think a should be getting out more on the river. I haven't been bothering as my local river is way up and quite coloured.
It's good to see younger members on the forum

The weather has been pretty rubbish this week....I've only managed to get on the water 4 times this week...I knew the rain was coming so I was out twice on Monday and twice on Tuesday...then the rain came and that was that. On Monday morning I tried the River North Esk at Polton...it was a beautiful morning...I was on the water for and hour and a half...no fish but three pulls...all missed. In the evening I headed to Rosebery Reservoir...it was a glorious evening,,but a flat calm on the reservoir...I was eaten alive by midges last week so I took the boat out...I had my Yamame tried that for an hour then my traditional western rod...I eventually nailed one on that...2.5 lbs...I would have liked to have caught one on the T rod but it wasn't to be. I was back on the River North Esk at Polton on Tuesday morning before work...another 3 or 4 pulls but no connection...aaargh. On the way home I stopped off at the River South Esk at Newbattle Abbey College section...I fished for an hour before it pelted down and I headed home for tea...same story as it's been all week this time with 2 tugs and no connections.

I was through Polton way on Tuesday walking from Lasswade to Roslin Glen. I had a look at the river but again I wasn't inspired to get the rod out, the north esk always does this to me. I spent a while in Roslin before heading back to Edinburgh.
I'm sure I'll get the rod out on the river someday but it just seems that it puts me in the wrong mood for some reason.
I always liked the river around Auchendinny and the Glencourse burn always looks interesting.

At least you are getting out fishing! The water here has not abated at all. The rivers are stuffed with salmon and sea trout though. That's going to make for an interesting time when I do get out again.
There has been some discussion on how to get a better hook up rate. My feeling is that we are sometimes too connected with the flies and the fish does not have a chance to turn with the fly before setting it. I've certainly found this when I let the rod drop low on a downstream sweep of the flies and I've tracked the line with the rod tip. I try and make a concious effort to keep the rod up or maintain a ninety degree angle to the line as it sweeps across the current downstream.
I'm sure these two things have improved my hookup rate fishing down and across, if I remember to do it.... and that's a big IF.
Keep up the good work Alex! We're fishing with you.

Wednesday 4 July 2012 - Lasswade
I arrived at the river around 6pm...it was fairly high but clear...I started with a Sawyer's Killer Bug fished upstream...no takes...changed to a sakasa kebari and worked upstream...a few fish were rising ahead of me...I covered them with the black sakasa kebari..no interest shown...I changed to a pale watery dun...nothing....the fish were still rising...infuriating....I changed to a dry greenwell's glory...still no contact and still the fish we rising....eventually the rises stopped and I moved on...I tried about 3 different flies in the next run....then I heard the thunder...then the rain came...it belted down...I fished on...the river rose a bit...not too much but 10 minutes or so it was a chocolate colour but still fishable...I fished on for another 10 minutes or so but I could sense that it wasn't going to be my day so I gave up.

custheyder, I heard it okay but it was miles away...it wasn't overhead or anything like that...I didn't see any lightning...probably because I was looking down at the river and not up...if I saw lightning then I would have high tailed it pronto...

Monday 16 July 2012 - Polton Stopped off for an hour before work...it's a nice morning, the river is quite high but running clear....I decide to fish a pair of size 16 spiders down and across to see if I can pick up anything on the way downstream...it's a strong current so I'm glad I have my wading staff with me...I don't see a rise and not any interest shown in the fly...I'm thinking of switching to a single sakasa kebari when a fish hits the tail spider hard...it's not big but it puts up a good fight before photographed and released Perfect wet fly water tight lines Alex

Looks to be a slight tinge to the water. From the height on the bank you can tell it's pushing through. Well done on hitting the little chap. I always feel much better about a trip if I catch a fish, no matter what size. They are all beautiful and most welcome.

Thursday 26 July 2012 - Polton Started out about 6pm and this evening I'm staying out till the bats come out to play...maybe the fish will come out to play as well I decide to start at the bridge pool and work my way downstream using a Woolly Bugger and see what happens.....I see a rise on the far bank just downstream from me and cover it with the WB but no joy....I'm two thirds of the way down the pool when I get a good pull and a fish is on....it leaps about a few times and gives a good account of itself until its safely netted, photographed and returned...and here he is I continue for another hour or so working my way downstream...I had another 8 pulls or so but no connection....I decide to change to a sedge and work upstream....I get a few rises but again no connections....I'm now back at the bridge pool and the bats are flying all over the place...I don't see any rises though but that doesn't matter because I trout has just engulfed my sedge and he's jumping all over the place but I finally land him....and that's it no more rises to the fly as I work my way to the top of the pool then pack up for the night. tight lines Alex
